Arranging reasonable adjustments for exams
If you have a disability, a long-term health condition, or a specific learning need, you may be eligible for reasonable adjustments during your exams. These adjustments ensure you can demonstrate your abilities fairly.
Exam support available
Reasonable adjustments are changes to exam conditions that reduce barriers for students with disabilities or specific needs. They ensure that every student has an equal opportunity to succeed under fair conditions.
Support can include:
- Extra time to complete your exam
- Rest or supervised breaks
- Large-print or alternative-format exam papers
- Private or low-distraction exam room
- Use of ergonomic furniture or specialist equipment
- Use of assistive technology (for example, screen readers or speech-to-text software)
Your adjustment will depend on your individual circumstances and supporting evidence.
How to request a reasonable adjustment
If you believe you require adjustments for your exams, please contact the Wellbeing and Disability Support team as early as possible – ideally at least one month before your exam period begins.
- Contact the Wellbeing and Disability Support team: A Disability Coordinator will arrange a meeting to discuss your needs and the reasonable adjustment options available.
- Prepare your evidence: You’ll need to submit evidence when you apply. This may include a doctor’s letter, diagnostic report, or your existing Personal Support Plan.
- Complete the Reasonable Adjustments Application Form: You’ll be sent a form to complete, and your Disability Coordinator will guide you through the process.
- Agree on suitable adjustments: The team will review your application and evidence. They may contact you to discuss this in more detail.
- Receive confirmation: You’ll receive a confirmation email outlining your approved adjustments.
What to expect during your exam
On the day of your exam:
- Your adjustments will already be in place; you do not need to remind the invigilator.
- You will sit your exam in a designated room if your approved adjustments require individual or small-group arrangements.
- If you have extra time or breaks, the invigilator will manage these for you.
- You can bring any approved equipment or aids (for example, ergonomic cushions or tinted overlays).
If anything doesn’t seem right on the day, raise your hand and speak quietly to an invigilator – they are there to help.
