New AI guidance for students

Understanding your responsibility on using AI ethically in your studies

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and other study support tools are becoming part of everyday learning. To help students use these tools responsibly and confidently, Regent College London (RCL) has published new guidance on the ethical use of AI.

What does the new guidance cover?

The student guide sets out clear principles and expectations for how AI can and cannot be used in your studies. It is designed to protect academic integrity, support learning, and ensure fairness for all students.

The guidance explains:

  • When AI can support your learning, such as brainstorming ideas or improving understanding.
  • What you must always do, including declaring AI use where required.
  • What is not allowed, such as submitting AI-generated work as your own.
  • How to protect your data and avoid sharing personal or College information.
  • Your responsibilities when using AI tools, even if the output was generated by a system.

What you need to do

You should read the new guidance carefully to understand the rules around using AI in your studies.

Key tip: Rules around using AI can vary between programmes and assessments; it’s important to always check your module guidance and assignment briefs carefully before using AI tools.
