Celebrating Ramadan and Lent at RCL
This year, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on 17 February, and the Christian season of Lent began on 18 February. These sacred seasons share values of reflection, self-discipline, and connection.
What is Ramadan?
Observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the holy month of Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon. It is a time of fasting from dawn until sunset, prayer, reflection and community for Muslims around the world.
What is Lent?
Lent is a 40 day Christian season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, leading up to Easter Sunday. It is a time for reflection, spiritual growth and preparation.
Tips for studying
During this period of personal and spiritual growth, it’s important to balance your personal commitments alongside your academic responsibilities.
Changes to routine can take some adjustment, so here are a few practical tips that may help.
Plan around your energy peaks
If you’re fasting, you may find you concentrate better after eating. Try to schedule your independent study during these higher-energy periods.
Make use of prayer spaces
Dedicated prayer room facilities are available on all campuses, providing a quiet space for prayer and reflection. If you’re unsure where these are located, speak with the campus team at reception.
Support each other
Whether you’re observing Ramadan or Lent, or supporting a friend who is, checking in with one another and respecting different routines helps foster a positive and inclusive community.
If anything is affecting your studies, you can also speak with your Personal Academic Tutor for support.
Wishing a peaceful and blessed Ramadan and Lent to all who are observing.
