Living in London

Student life in London

Living in London is exciting, diverse, and full of opportunities, but it can take a little time to find your feet.
This page gives you practical guidance on getting around, saving money, managing day-to-day costs, and staying safe. Use it as a starting point to help you feel more confident and settled while studying in the capital.

Getting around London (Oyster cards, buses, and travel)

London has one of the best public transport networks in the world, making it easy to travel across the city. Most students use an Oyster card or contactless bank card on buses, the Tube, trains, and trams.
If you’re studying full time, you may be eligible for a Student Oyster photocard, which offers discounted travel.
Plan journeys and check fares using the Transport for London (TfL) website or app.

Student discounts and saving money

Being a student in London comes with plenty of discounts if you know where to look.
You can save money on food, clothes, travel, entertainment, and online shopping with student discount schemes.
Popular options include TOTUM, UNiDAYS, and Student Beans. Always ask in shops and cafés – many places offer student discounts even if they don’t advertise them.

Save the Student is also a useful website for clear, practical advice on managing your money and making the most of student finance.

Cost of living support

London can be expensive, but support is available if you’re struggling financially.
You may be eligible for help with budgeting, managing bills, or accessing emergency financial support.
