Using Turnitin to submit assessments

1–2 minutes

Submitting your assessments via Turnitin

All of your written essays or coursework assessments should be submitted to Turnitin through the official Canvas or Moodle links provided.

Using the Similarity Report

When you submit your assessments in Turnitin, a Similarity Report is created. This report highlights where text matches other sources and hasn’t been correctly referenced. It also provides a similarity score, indicating the percentage of matched text, to help you identify areas that may need review.

You are encouraged to use the Turnitin draft submission link to review your work before the deadline. This allows you to check that your sources are properly cited and that your referencing is accurate.

You may submit a draft up to three times only. Submitting more than three times is not permitted and may be reviewed as a potential academic misconduct concern. The draft submission option is a supportive tool to help you check your referencing before submitting your final version.

AI detection score

Turnitin also uses an Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection tool that generates an AI score. This score is not visible to students.

The AI detection tool is designed to identify content that may have been produced using AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini.

Where significant AI-generated content is identified, submissions may be reviewed in line with academic misconduct procedures. If you are unsure whether AI tools are permitted for your assessment, check your module guidance carefully before using them.

To better understand how to use AI appropriately in your studies, please read our AI guidance for students article.
